Thanks Hiep, sql workbench looks like interesting tool, reading the sources found in workbench/sql/VariablePool.java initPromptPattern method - the workbench.sql.parameter.prefix is based on regular expressions, so maybe (not tested) you can write an expression to recognize $P or $V at the same time as parameters.

BTW, I use Aqua Data Studio they provide a free license for open source developers. The default sql editor doesn't provide variable substitution, but they have a tool called Fluid Shell which can define and replace variables (and run as a shell script)
